There is something enchanting about the little islands scattered along the Maine coastline. Most of the time I start my paintings with a specific location in mind, but for this particular artwork, I first began by expressively painting the sky and water that unfolded in my imagination. After setting the brush down and taking a step back, it became immediately clear which island belonged in this scene. At the end of a small harbor in Lubec, Maine, this little island named “Pope’s Folly” marks the easternmost point in the United States. If you ever find yourself venturing this far downeast, you might be fortunate enough to catch a breathtaking sky display like this one, with Pope’s Folly standing as the centerpiece at the entrance of Passamaquoddy Bay.
